New Mexico - White sand national park

From the moment I first watched Breaking Bad, I wanted to visit New Mexico. Friends who had visited the state had filled my mind with vivid tales, making it a dream destination on my travel list. Yet, the thought of exploring this beautiful yet desolate region alone, especially at night, had always held me back. However, the allure of its dark skies, perfect for Milky Way photography made me gather the courage to embark on this adventure solo. My first destination was white sand national park.

The Journey Begins

My trip started with a long flight that included a stopover in Phoenix, as I couldn't find a last-minute direct flight. I landed at Albuquerque International Airport around 6 PM, eager to make my way to Las Cruces as soon as possible. But as is often the case in travel, an unexpected adventure awaited me.

After a lengthy discussion with the Avis rental car executive about finding a vehicle with good tires and mileage, I discovered that many of Toyota’s best models were no longer available due to a promotion of American cars. Eventually, he recommended a Chevy as my best option. However, shortly after picking up some essentials, I noticed a warning light indicating an issue with the tires. Reluctantly, I returned to Avis to swap the car, which set me back another two hours.

By 8 PM, I was finally back on the road, facing a three-hour drive to Las Cruces. I wasn’t keen on making stops, and my goal was to reach my Airbnb before midnight for a good night’s rest. I drove non-stop through the New Mexico evening, eager to soak in the scenery.

Embracing the New Mexico Landscape

Driving through New Mexico at night in summer was an experience like no other. The roads stretched out, empty for miles, broken only by the occasional vehicles. With loud music blasting and a cup of coffee at my side, I relished the freedom of the open road, feeling the beauty of the breathtaking landscape all around me. I couldn’t help but wonder if I would ever see traffic in this vast expanse.

The Avis executive had cautioned me about flash floods, a real threat in New Mexico. I passed numerous warning signs, and Google highlighted the danger zones along my route. Thankfully, the rains had come the day before, easing my concerns.

Upon arriving at my Airbnb, I was greeted by a charming, colorful space complete with a fully furnished kitchen and a breakfast provided by my lovely host. After a long day of travel, I decided to rest before venturing out the next day to explore the first stop of my itinerary - White Sands National Park

Exploring White Sands National Park

The following day, I took it easy and ventured out around 4 PM to visit the local visitor center before it closed at 5 PM. Located about 52 miles from Las Cruces,  the park was my first real taste of New Mexico's stunning natural beauty. Even at that hour, the heat was intense, so I waited until 6 PM to explore further.

As I stepped into the park, the landscape took my breath away. Despite the heat, I enjoyed the  gentle breeze and a packed dinner under covered picnic tables. Families were out sand sledding, hiking, and having picnics, filling the air with laughter and joy.

The park felt like a surreal celebration of a white Christmas on a scorching summer evening. It was wonderful to behold. I could see endless miles of dunes shimmering like a mirage, as the sun peeked through dark clouds, casting a glow on the sand that resembled white crystals.

While the park is relatively small compared to other dune parks, its white sand is truly unique. As soon as I stepped onto the sand, I noticed it wasn’t dry but rather damp, thanks to the water source that lies beneath. I walked a little further and settled down to enjoy the sunset. Although it wasn’t the most spectacular display, I found that in nature, every moment possesses its own beauty, adding character to the scene.

A Historical Wonder

At the visitor center, I watched a 15-minute video about the formation of the white sand desert. The rangers were incredibly friendly, patiently answering all the questions I had. I learned that White Sands National Park was formed over thousands of years from gypsum crystals that shimmer like an ocean of diamonds under the desert sun. The gypsum originates from nearby Lake Lucero, deposited during periodic floods.

I was amazed to discover that millions of years ago, this area was covered by the ancient Permian Sea. As the climate changed, the sea gradually receded, leaving behind vast deposits of gypsum and other minerals. The dunes are unique, composed of gypsum crystals, which are rare in sand dune formations.

The park serves as a sanctuary for desert-adapted plants and animals, with some species evolving to thrive in this unique environment. As I wandered, I realized the ever-present southwest winds sculpted this ethereal landscape, continuously shaping the dunes and creating a dynamic canvas.

Discovering Ancient Prints

During my visit, I learned that ancient prints could be found on the trails, though the rangers informed me that these prints were not accessible by foot. Fascinatingly, these imprints from the past are preserved in the museum, where visitors can marvel at the remnants of a time long gone.

Trip Tips for Future Adventurers

If you're looking for an adventurous experience, White Sands National Park offers backcountry camping permits for those wanting to sleep under the stars amid the dunes. Just be mindful that there are no developed campgrounds or facilities within the park, and you'll need a ranger escort to enter or exit after dark.

Permits: Remember, permits are required for drone photography, camping overnight, and for entering or exiting early or late, as a ranger must accompany you. Make sure to apply for these permits at least 15 working days in advance. I missed this opportunity. Hope you can make a difference.

As I reflected on my journey, I felt a deep appreciation for the natural beauty and rich history of New Mexico. From the striking landscapes to the warm hospitality of its people, this trip fulfilled a long-held dream, and I left with a heart full of memories and a desire to return.
